The building where the seance was being held wasn’t what I expected. In fact, it was the opposite.

“This is the place?” I glanced around, confused. “This is a storefront.”

“It says it hosts seances.” Jack pointed at a poster in the window. “Hold on.” He kept a light hand on my arm, as if expecting me to disappear, and poked his head inside. When he came back out, he looked grim. “They’re in there. Chris is talking up some chick in a robe.”

“Don’t be sexist,” I chided, the admonishment automatic.

“What did I say that was sexist?”

“Chick. She’s not a chick, she’s a woman.”

“I’ve heard you say chick before.”

“Yes, but I’m allowed because I have the same parts.”

He rolled his eyes and made a big show of rubbing his hands up and down both my arms, as if warming me even though it wasn’t cold. “Tell me what you’re thinking.”

“I’m thinking that ... she’s clearly watching us.”

“She is,” Jack agreed, moving his hands to the back of my head so he could smooth my hair. He seemed to need to be in constant contact. “I think that’s telling.”

“How?”

“She clearly wants to keep tabs on you, Charlie. She must know who you are.”

“She doesn’t want to talk to me, though.” I was still bitter about that. “Apparently stalking is fine but talking is not allowed.”

“Baby ... .” He looked pained as he rolled his neck.

“Don’t bother.” I shook my head. “I shouldn’t be feeling sorry for myself, but I can’t seem to stop it. I’ll ... do better.”

“I don’t want you to do better. You’re doing amazingly well. It’s okay to be bitter about this. It’s not fair.”

I studied his face. “But?” I prodded.

“How do you know there’s a but?”

“Because I’ve met you. You have your but face on.”

His smiled. “You only said that to make me laugh. Well done.”

“Maybe, but your face says you’re about to throw a ‘but’ at me.”

“It’s okay to be upset and bitter. In your shoes, I couldn’t be anything else ... but, we don’t know what she’s dealing with. Maybe she’s afraid she’ll lead this Sybil woman to you.”

“If that were true, why risk crossing paths with me at all?”

Jack hesitated and then held out his hands. “It’s a fair question and ... there’s only one thing I can think. Have you considered it’s possible that she’s so desperate to see you she can’t help looking from afar?”

“No, Jack.” I folded my arms over my chest and stared him down. “I can’t consider that because it’s too late. We’re all in the same place. If Casey managed to find me, there’s no doubt this woman can find me. She might’ve already done it and could be debating how to approach. The time for hiding is over. This is the time for action.”

He sighed and nodded. “You’re right. I just can’t get the idea that they’re trying to protect you out of my head.”

“I think you believe that because the alternative is unfathomable. You love me so much you can’t understand anyone not wanting to be around me.
